Een platenspeler, wasmachine of broodrooster? Deze creatieve moeder maakt het allemaal

Van een vaatwasser tot een laptop: een Britse peuter heeft het allemaal in haar speelgoedcollectie. Maar dan wel van karton! Creatieve moeder Sydney Piercey geeft de peuter op deze manier veilig en duurzaam speelgoed. Het is fantastisch om mee te spelen én het kost niks.

Karton als basis

Kinderspeelgoed is er in overvloed. Maar speelgoed dat duurzaam, veilig, leerzaam én goedkoop is, dat is een hele uitdaging om te vinden. De Britse Sydney Piercey besloot het daarom over een andere boeg te gooien. De creatieve moeder ging zelf aan de slag om speelgoed te maken voor haar peuter en nam daarbij karton als basis.

Wasmachine en broodrooster

“Ik kwam op het idee om speelgoed van karton te maken, doordat ik mijn dochter wilde leren hoe je veilig met apparaten moet omgaan”, vertelt de creatieve moeder. “Kinderen vinden de dingen die papa en mama gebruiken ontzettend interessant, zoals de wasmachine of een broodrooster. Maar dat is natuurlijk niet bepaald veilig om mee te spelen.” Daarom besloot Piercey zelf een wasmachine en broodrooster voor haar dochter te maken. Van karton!

Voordelen

Het kartonnen speelgoed heeft veel voordelen, volgens Sydney. “Zo kan ik mijn kind leren hoe ze apparaten moet gebruiken en kan ze mij nadoen als ik het huishouden doe.” Voor haarzelf is het knutselen met karton vooral een uitlaatklep. “Het is mijn manier om te ontspannen. En niets maakt mij gelukkiger dan mijn dochtertje dat blij wordt van het speelgoed.” En het allermooiste is dat het speelgoed helemaal niets kost. De creatieveling bewaart de verpakkingen van bijvoorbeeld hondenvoer en eieren, lege wc-rollen en al het andere karton dat anders gerecycled zou worden.

Educatieve spellen

Toch zijn het niet enkel apparaten die de Britse moeder namaakt. Ze verzint ook educatieve spellen, die ze vervolgens zelfs in elkaar zet. Zo zien we een alternatieve blokkendoos op haar Instagramaccount. Zonder blokken, maar met gekleurde bierdopjes. Het laatste project van Piercey? Een platenspeler! “Onze dochter was het hele weekend in de ban van haar vaders platenspeler”, verklaart Sydney. “Dus ik ging aan de slag met een kartonnen doos en wat lege wc-rollen.” Even later kon de peuter een heuse platenspeler aan haar gigantische collectie kartonnen speelgoed toevoegen.

Caps and corks colour sorter by Lily and I ? (Putting our summer sundowners to good use) Super simple to make with: Cardboard box Bottle caps and/ or corks Paint or (we used) paint sticks (less messy and quicker drying) Scalpel or scissors Paint the inside of your caps and outside of your corks various colours (Or get your little one to do this). Draw around each cap and cork in different places all over your box. Cut out your outlines with scalpel or scissors. Colour around the cutouts with corresponding colours of painted caps and corks. Have been in bed with my laptop most of this morning trying to write. In theory Saturday mornings are my time to write undisturbed (whilst Sp keeps the girls busy). In practice I have been constantly disturbed ???? Made this cardboard laptop for Lily weeks ago for when Sp or I are working on ours, so she can sit next to us and copy. Well— this morning Willow has picked off and teethed on half the keys, and Lily, wholly uninterested in sitting quietly next to me has been hoovering the same little spot under the wardrobe at full volume (I know the hoover has no volume but it feels like full volume when all you want is peace) and the longest piece of writing which makes the most sense is probably this post! Again— ????

This mornings cardboard creation is a hairdryer, concentrator nozzle and Afro comb for Lily! . Every member of our family has very different hair— I have Afro hair, Stu has blonde hair, Lily has curly hair and Willow has baby hair. When we talk about hair it’s not just ‘how beautiful your hair is Lily’ it’s also ‘how beautiful is Mummy’s hair’. *My natural hair* not just whatever wig/ weave I am rocking. This cardboard creation is going to accompany those chats! . Features include – speed and temperature switches that move forwards and backwards and concentrator and Afro comb attachments that can be chopped and changed! . Shoutout to @cissywears – a mum run business that has been selling products which promote and celebrate diversity since *before* the movement – I used a box of hers to make this. . Shoutout to my hairdresser of TWENTY THREE years @dianatfrancis. You continue to teach me about hair and make me (and my hair) feel beautiful like every little girl should feel!

Lily’s first record player! (Swipe) . 2 things Stu gets most grumpy about – the piles of cardboard boxes he’s not allowed to throw out and Lily turning his amp on and off with reckless abandon! Feeding two birds with one crumb with this one!?. Features include – on/off switch that actually turns, needle arm that swivels, ‘needle arm raiser’ that flicks back and forwards, counterweight that swivels, and turning volume control/ whatever the other knobs are that can be turned and of course removable record! ?. This way Stu can teach her how to use it all properly, and I’ve put three or four boxes (of 10000s) to good use! Going to make some speakers later! . Double tap if this is your fave creation so far!
